Frequently Asked Questions
Player Listing
Are players listed on irishsportinglegends selected from a certain era?
Yes, the legend players, listed across all sports, have been chosen from 1970 to today.
Why does irishsportinglegends.com only include players from 1970 onwards?
For practical purposes a cut off point is needed who, for instance remembers the great Wexford four in a row All-Ireland winning football team of 1914 to 1918?
Of course there are a lot of great players from more recent times (the 40s, 50s, 60s) who could have been listed but you would have to ask just how familiar would the general sporting public of today be with those players?
The danger would be to provide listings of past players who most people would simply never have heard of. Selecting players from 1970 onwards affords people the opportunity, if not of having seen these players live than at least, of seeing them in past TV highlights and re-runs of famous matches.
How does irishsportinglegends.com choose which players to list for selection?
With lists of more than 60-70 players per team, the drop-down selection boxes of players names simply becomes impractical to use. So there is a physical limit as to the numbers of players that can be selected for any one team.
As far as possible we have tried to create standard criteria for the selection of listed players.
For instance, for the Irish soccer team we have listed those players who have made 20 or more international appearances and for the Irish rugby team we have listed those players who have made more 10 or over international appearances.
For the Hurling All-stars we have listed those players who have won three or more All-Star awards.
For the Football All-stars we have listed those players who have won three or more All-Star awards.
For county GAA teams we have selected all county players who have received an All-Star. We also have included those players who have made a significant contribution over the years to their county team. This list of significant contributors is a grey area how do you decide which players really deserve to be listed.
It is to a degree subjective and it will, I am sure, lead to arguments and debate, but then this is part of what irishsportinglegends.com is all about.
We would welcome your submission on players whom you feel have been omitted from the various team listings. We would ask you to provide reasons and fact based evidence as to why any suggested player should be included e.g. player statistics, county appearances, years of service, player of the year awards etc.
Voting
How are votes for legend teams calculated?
The process is very democratic once registered you can only vote once per team and the players receiving the most votes for team positions get selected in those positions on the legends team.
Regular checks of our database will also ensure only voters with valid email addresses will have their vote included.
